DEVILS -DEMONS

The Bible illustrates the existence of the devil and his followers known as demons or evil spirits. Their end will be eternal damnation, when God judges Satan and his host at the judgment. (RV 12:4, RV 20:10-15)

All the living religions of the world, including Islam and Mahayana Buddhism, believe in the existence of what Christianity calls the devil. Only in the Christian religion is the evil spirit clearly identified as an integral part of revelation.

The Gospels are filled with descriptive narratives about the activity and strategy of the devil. Time and again Christ drove out demons from persons who were possessed. Not only are the Gospels explicit about the existence and schemes of the evil spirits, they also state that their number is legion, a biblical synonym for an immense multitude.

The mystical Body of Satan is animated by Satan and his minions. It is composed of human beings who are willfully cooperating in the work of the devil on earth. Their success often takes on superhuman outcomes. Satan exists but he tries to hide that fact from the world. "And no wonder, for Satan himself disguises himself as an Angel of light. It is no great thing, then if his ministers disguise themselves as ministers of justice. Their end will be according to their deeds." (2 COR 11:14,15)

In the mysterious plan of God’s will for us, evil spirits serve a distinctive function toward mankind. We can distinguish between the purpose that the devil has, and the purpose of God.

The devil’s purpose is to seduce. He consciously and deliberately wants to lead people astray from their faithful service of God’s laws. The devil’s intention is always malicious. Everything he does to man is wantonly evil. His purpose is to harm man, spiritually and wantonly evil supernaturally, and, if possible eternally.

Those who choose to follow the devil’s deception and lies, descend from the world of the spirit, for which they were created, to the world of the animals, which they were meant to dominate. Refusing to be ruled by the laws of a loving God, they find themselves ruled by the blind impulses of the world and beasts beneath them.

God’s purpose, on the other hand, is always good. He permits the devil to tempt us but not to harm us. God’s divine intention is that by resisting the evil spirit, we might draw closer to God. God allows us to be tempted to find out our loyalty. This gives us the opportunity to show our faith and trust in God. It tests our virtue by giving us the chance to grow because of the struggle. This struggle proves our fidelity. Resisting the devil’s assaults more generously serves God.

The Devil is never permitted to tempt us beyond our strength. This means that we always have enough spiritual power to overcome the devil. We have the grace to pray for light to recognize the evil spirit and strength to resist his advances. "Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." (JAS 4:7) "Power he has, but it is limited. He can neither tempt (MT 4:1), afflict (JB 1:6), kill (JB 2:6; HEB 2:14), nor touch a believer without God’s permission.

Our own fallen nature alone can create havoc in our souls for an entire lifetime without the temptations of a fallen angel. The devil can encourage our thoughts to despair, sadness, anger, resentment, hate, lust, greed and jealousy. It does not mean that every thought of this kind is inspired by the fallen angels. Sometimes we are our own worst enemy. That is why self-control is so important to spiritual growth.

The Devil is a perfect deceiver. Three names for the evil spirit are regularly used in the Bible. Each has a profound revealed meaning. He is Satan (Hebrew) because he is an adversary, especially one who plots against another. He is a demon (Greek, daimon) because he is a spiritual being possessed of extraordinary powers.

He is a devil (Greek, diabolos) because he accuses those he has deceived by charging them with the sins they committed. Given his deceptive character, we should expect him to hide his real designs. This most significant importance of shrewdness in identifying what may be a divine inspiration is actually a demonic influence. The best protection is humility of mind. The devil always poses intelligent reasons for what he urges people to do. Proud persons are no match for the devil.

As a deceiver, and knowing that humans must have a religion of some kind, the devil attempts to establish one based on the divinity of man and the supremacy of the State. Teaching that the government is the supreme power to which everything, even man’s conscience, must be subordinated.

Many of God’s children are deceived into believing that there is no higher power or law than that of the State. God and His law must be abolished and the State worshiped. Loyalty to the State is then elevated to the place of a religion.

The devil’s influence on the human masses is no doubt much more powerful than the seduction of individual men. Mass are more liable to suggestion. What we know of mass psychology makes us fear that, outside the Christian people, Satan’s influence on mankind is a very real fact.

The devil’s strategy is logical. He first approaches us with a suggestion in the imagination. This can grow into a specious reason in the mind. If dwelled on, it influences the will by motivating us to do something that is actually bad but apparently good. Thus deceit, hiding the real evil and falsehoods are basic to the devil’s technique.

The devil never reveals his true intentions, but masks his purpose under various disguises. He adapts himself to peoples’ temperaments and character, even to their tastes. If they are meek and submissive, he tries to seduce them along self-effacing lines.

If someone is bold and headstrong, then the devil urges them to evil under an aggressive form. If they are worldly and pleasure seeking, he will enter their door with temptations of the flesh. If they are prayerful and spiritual-minded, he will appear as an Angel of light. If they are emotional, he adjusts his tactics to where his intended victims give least resistance to their passions. If they are intellectual, he will accommodate himself and tempt them to pride and sins of the mind.

The devil uses human beings and human institutions as agents. Here we must be careful to distinguish different ways in which the evil spirit can operate in or through people on earth.

There are such things as possession, when the devil exerts his influence over a person by inner control of his body; and obsession, when he attacks their bodies from the outside. The victim’s liberty of soul always remains intact. Although the Church’s ritual for exorcism mentions as probable (not certain) signs of possession, it acknowledges certain phenomena like speaking or understanding an unknown language or showing strength above one’s natural capacity.

The Church warns against concluding hastily that a person is possessed by the devil. Many so called possessions (or obsessions) are no doubt to be attributed to illusion, hysteria or fraud. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that these experiences occur.

Completely different from possession or obsession is the devil’s capacity to so use people or human institutions. They become, in effect, instruments of a demonic will.

Satan summons innumerable demons and scatters them, some to one city and some to another, throughout the whole world, so no province, no state of life, no individual is overlooked.

Consider the address the devil makes to them. How he spurs them on to lay snares for men, to seek to shackle them. First they tempt us to covet riches so that they may more easily attain the empty honors of this world.

Next, comes pride. The devil’s strategy by which he can chain people to his will is to incite them to riches (whether material or otherwise). Thus in order to obtain honor and human recognition they are induced to pride. From these three steps the Evil One leads to all other vices.

This attachment is a form of virtual slavery. Held in the devil’s shackles, a person or group of persons (whether individually or collectively) becomes the unwitting tool of the powers of darkness.

1 COR 10:21     You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of DEMONS too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord’s table and the table of DEMONS.

2 COR 2:11     In order that SATAN might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.

2 COR 11:14     And no wonder, for SATAN himself masquerades as an angel of light.

2 COR 12:7     To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of SATAN, to torment me.

EPH 2:2         In which you used to live when you followed the ways of  this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the SPIRIT who is now at work in those who are disobedient.

EPH 4:27     And do not give the DEVIL a foothold.

EPH 6:11     Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the DEVIL’S schemes.

EPH 6:12     For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the SPIRITUAL FORCES OF EVIL in the heavenly realms.

EPH 6:16     In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the EVIL ONE.

1 THES 2:18     For we wanted to come to you — certainly I, Paul, did, again and again — but SATAN stopped us.

2 THES 2:9     The coming of the LAWLESS ONE will be in accordance with the work of SATAN displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders...

2 THES 3:3     But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen and protect you from the EVIL ONE.

1 TM 1:20      Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to SATAN to be taught not to blaspheme.

1 TM 3:6       He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the DEVIL.

1 TM 3:7      He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the DEVIL’S trap.

1 TM 4:1     The SPIRIT clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving SPIRITS and things taught by DEMONS.

1 TM 5:15     Some have in fact already turned away to follow SATAN.

2 TM 2:26     And that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the DEVIL, who has taken them captive to do his will.

HEB 2:14     Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death — that is, the DEVIL.

JAS 2:19     You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the DEMONS believe that — and shudder.

JAS 3:15     Such "wisdom" does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the DEVIL.

JAS 4:7     Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the DEVIL, and he will flee from you.

1 PT 5:8      Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the DEVIL prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

1 JN 2:13     I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you have overcome the EVIL ONE. I write to you, dear children, because you have known the Father.

1 JN 2:14     I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the EVIL ONE.

1 JN 2:18     Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the ANTICHRIST is coming, even now many ANTICHRISTS have come. This is how we know it is the last hour.

1 JN 2:22     Who is the liar? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ. such a man is the ANTICHRIST — he denies the Father and the Son.

1 JN 3:8      He who does what is sinful is of the DEVIL, because the DEVIL has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the DEVIL’S work.

1 JN 3:10    This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the DEVIL are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother.

1 JN 3:12     Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the EVIL ONE and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous.

1 JN 4:3      But every SPIRIT that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the SPIRIT of the ANTICHRIST, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.

1 JN 5:18     We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the one who was born of God keeps him safe, and the EVIL ONE cannot harm him.

1 JN 5:19     We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the EVIL ONE.

2 JN 1:7     Many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the ANTICHRIST.

Jude 1:9     But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the DEVIL about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring a slanderous accusation against him...

RV 2:9     I know your afflictions and your poverty — yet you are rich! I know the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of SATAN.

RV 2:10     Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the DEVIL will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life.

RV 2:13     I know where you live — where SATAN has his throne. Yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me, even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was put to death in your city — where SATAN lives.

RV 3:9      I will make those who are of the synagogue of SATAN, who claim to be Jews though they are not, but are liars —I will make them come and fall down at your feet and acknowledge that I have loved you.

RV 9:20     The rest of mankind that were not killed by these plagues still did not repent of the work of their hands; they did not stop worshiping DEMONS, and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood — idols that cannot see or hear or walk.

RV 12:3     Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous red DRAGON with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on his heads.

RV 12:4     His tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth. The DRAGON stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that he might devour her child the moment it was born.

RV 12:7     And there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the DRAGON, and the DRAGON and his angels fought back.

RV 12:9     The great DRAGON was hurled down — that ancient SERPENT called the DEVIL, or SATAN, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.

RV 12:12     Therefore rejoice, you heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea, because the DEVIL has gone down to you! He is filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short.

RV 12:13     When the DRAGON saw that he had been hurled to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child.

RV 12:15     Then from his mouth the SERPENT spewed water like a river, to overtake the woman and sweep her away with the torrent.

RV 12:16     But the earth helped the woman by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that the DRAGON had spewed out of his mouth.

RV 12:17     Then the DRAGON was enraged at the woman and went off to make war against the rest of her offspring — those who obey God’s commandments and hold to the testimony of Jesus.

RV 13:1     And the DRAGON stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast coming out of the sea. He had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on his horns, and on each head a blasphemous name.

RV 13:2     The beast I saw resembled a leopard, but had feet like those of a bear and a mouth like that of a lion. The DRAGON gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority.

RV 13:4     Men worshiped the DRAGON because he had given authority to the BEAST, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, "Who is like the beast? Who can make war against him?"

RV 13:11     Then I saw another BEAST, coming out of the earth. He had two horns like a lamb, but he spoke like a DRAGON.

RV 16:13     Then I saw three EVIL SPIRITS that looked like frogs; they came out of the mouth of the DRAGON, out of the mouth of the BEAST a and out of the mouth of the false prophet.

RV 16:14     They are SPIRITS of DEMONS performing miraculous signs, and they go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them for the battle on the great day of God Almighty.

RV 18:2     With a mighty voice he shouted: "Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great! She has become a home for DEMONS and a haunt for every EVIL SPIRIT, a haunt for every unclean and detestable bird."

RV 20:2     He seized the DRAGON, that ancient SERPENT, who is the DEVIL, or SATAN, and bound him for a thousand years.

RV 20:7     When the thousand years are over, SATAN will be released from his prison.

RV 20:10     And the DEVIL, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

BAR 4:7     For you have provoked him who made you, the eternal God, offering sacrifice to DEVILS, and not to God.

BAR 4:35     For fire shall come upon her from the Eternal, long to endure, she shall be inhabited by DEVILS for a great time.

TB 6:16     Then the angel Raphael said to him: "Hear me, and I will show thee who they are, over whom the DEVIL can prevail."

TB 6:17     As to shut out God from themselves and from their mind, and to give themselves to their lust, as the horse and mule which have not understanding, over them the DEVIL hath power.

TB 6:19     And the DEVIL shall be driven away.

TB 8:3      Then the angel Raphael took the DEVIL, and bound him in the desert of upper Egypt.

TB 12:3     He conducted me and brought me safe again, he received the money of Gabelus, he caused me to have my wife, and he chased from her the EVIL SPIRIT.

TB 12:14     And now the Lord hath sent me to heal thee, and to deliver Sara, the son’s wife from the DEVIL.

WIS 2:24     But by the envy of the DEVIL, death entered the world, and they who are in his possession experience it.
